August 2014 saw the release of Microgaming’s eagerly anticipated and feature packed 243 way slot, themed on the Jurassic Park film.
This slot is visually absolutely stunning. The symbols, which are dinosaurs and characters from the film, appear on discs against a slowly panning background of primeval jungle and there are the usual film sequences and animations when they win.
The free spins bonus round is triggered by getting 3, 4 or 5 DNA in amber scatters. Jurassic Park follows in the grand tradition of other Microgaming slots such as Immortal Romance and Avalon II in having several different versions of the bonus round – 5 in fact. This is not a straightforward progression like Immortal Romance; until you have played the bonus round 25 times you get a random selection and after that you can choose which one you get.
All versions have 12 free spins (which can’t be retriggered apart from in the Brachiosaurus version) and the background and reels change for them.
The T-Rex version of the bonus round has the T-Rex symbol stacked, and the special feature is Wild Reels; T-Rex may appear and turn 1-5 reels randomly wild.
The Velociraptor version has the Velociraptor symbol stacked, and the special feature is Multiplier Wilds and Split Wilds; wilds can turn into double wilds to form 6 of a kind combos (paying double 5 of a kind) or they can appear with a 4x, 5x or 6x multiplier.
The Triceratops version has the Triceratops symbol stacked, and the special feature is Running Wilds, with the stack of wilds on each reel getting one bigger every spin. After any non winning spin, full stacks of wilds are held in place, partial stacks nudge to form full stacks and the remaining reels respin once.
The Brachiosaurus version has the Brachiosaurus stacked and the special feature is a Mystery Multiplier 0f 2x – 6x which last for a random number of spins before changing. This is the only version of the free spins round which allows them to be retriggered by getting a further 3 scatters.
The Dilophosaurus version has the Dilophosaurus stacked and the special feature is Winning Wilds, where random positions are turned into special wilds (by being spat on) that remain sticky as long as they form part of a winning combo.
Again in fine Microgaming tradition, there is an additional randomly triggered bonus feature in the base game, T-Rex Alert. This adds 35 extra wilds to the already stacked wilds on the reels for the following 6 paid spins (which must take place at current or lower bet level).
With paytable achievements to be completed as well, this game has plenty to hold the interest for a long time.
